Basic rules of Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a form of boxing originated in Thailand. Like every other sports, Muay Thai has its own exclusive set of rules. The rules are taught to the fighters in Muay Thai training in Thailand where the fighters go to join the Muay Thai camp in Thailand. The rules may appear mystifying and confusing to a western onlooker at first, but once they get the idea they would certainly like and enjoy the fight.

At the beginning of the event, the fighters have to perform a dance of Wai Khru before they start fighting. This is done so in order to show respect and gratitude towards their trainers and teachers, because of whom they are there to fight in the big event. Muay Thai events are the most popular events in Thailand, even more popular than soccer or any other sports. The events are telecasted for five to seven times every night for almost a week. The Thais are crazy for this event and are passionate about the Muay Thai sports.

A few simple rules of the Muay Thai boxing sports are that there would be five rounds of the match. Both the boxers have to wear gloves, which must have a minimum weight of six ounces. The gloves have to be of such material that they wound not get squeezed anyhow and would not get deformed from any side, which would result in an alteration of their real shape.

Each of the five rounds of the matches would be of three whole minutes and there would be breaks of two minutes after each round of the matches. The winner is determined by points or by knockout. The fighter, who wins the most number of rounds, wins the match. There is a red code for the participants of the Muay Thai boxing. They are allowed to wear trunks of colors blue or red only. They are not permitted to wear any shirts or shoes. Yes, they have to fight only wearing trunks. Both the boxers have to wear protection for their groins.

A few fighters wear a holy cloth named Mongol as headband. The piece of cloth has to be removed before the match starts. The fighters wear this headband to show respect towards their trainers, teachers and heritage. The piece of cloth is considered to provide the fighter with good luck. The materials required during the match, like the boxing gloves, stopwatch, warning bell, gong for signal, surgical tape, water and jock straps, have to be provided by the stadium where the match is being held.
